Hieu Minh Ly owns a small landholding at Virginia, South Australia which he’s converted from soil to hydroponic vegetable production.
Hieu says hydroponics is one of the growth areas in Australian agriculture with five percent of growers in his region converting each year.
High yields, the ability to control production and the smaller amount of land required are some of the advantages. The high cost of establishment and the importance of correctly balancing inputs are the challenges.
Hieu has just returned from a Nuffield study tour which included a visit to Holland’s world class hydroponics industry.
Applications for the 2013 round of Nuffield scholarships open on April 1st 2012 – www.nuffield.com.au
